President William Ruto has added fresh excitement to the much-hyped boxing clash between viral sensations Majembe and Mbavu the Destroyer, pledging Ksh1 million to each fighter ahead of their highly anticipated bout scheduled for April 4, 2026, in Nairobi.
The President made the surprise announcement during an interaction with Lang’ata MP Phelix Odiwuor, popularly known as Jalang’o, who briefed him on the fight that has dominated social media conversations in recent months.
Smiling as he addressed the matter, Ruto wished both boxers well and said he would financially support each of them equally, encouraging them to give fans an entertaining and competitive match.
In addition to the cash pledge, the President announced that he would sponsor 2,000 tickets for Kenyan fans to attend the bout. Half of the tickets will go to Majembe’s supporters, while the other half will be allocated to fans backing Mbavu the Destroyer.
The fight, organized by comedian and media personality Oga Obinna, has grown from playful online exchanges into one of the most anticipated amateur boxing events in the country. While the official venue is yet to be announced, organizers confirmed that the showdown will take place in Nairobi.
Several prominent figures have also thrown their support behind the fighters. Oga Obinna initially pledged Ksh1 million as the winner’s prize, while businessman Oketch Salah added Ksh200,000 to boost the prize pool and support both boxers.
Jalang’o publicly declared his support for Mbavu the Destroyer, while celebrated rapper Khaligraph Jones backed Majembe, further fueling excitement and rivalry ahead of the fight. Nairobi’s Chief Officer for Citizen Engagement and Customer Service, Geoffrey Mosiria, also offered to personally train one of the fighters as part of their preparation.
Jalang’o praised the President’s involvement, noting that his support had elevated the event and energized fans. Both leaders echoed the popular phrase linked to the fight, “weka mawe,” as they celebrated the growing buzz.
The surge in interest around amateur boxing began in late 2025 after Majembe’s TikTok videos showcasing his boxing skills went viral. His open challenge attracted several content creators, but it was Mbavu the Destroyer’s response that captured public attention and set the stage for the upcoming showdown.
With political leaders, celebrities, and fans now fully invested, the Majembe vs Mbavu the Destroyer bout is shaping up to be more than just a fight — it is fast becoming a major pop culture moment in Kenya’s sports entertainment scene.
